Saint Hohn Neumann is the third United States citizen and the first member of the American hierarchy to be declared a saint. Born in 1811 in Bohemia, now a part of Czechia, he came to the United States in 1836 and was ordained a priest by Bishop John Dubois of New your. Serving first as a pastor of several scattered parishes near Buffalo, in 1840 he entered the Redemptorist congregation and laboured twelve years in the areas surrounding Pittsburg and Baltimore. In 1852 he was named, against his will, fourth bishop of Philadelphia, where he gave an example of selfless dedication and zeal as bishop of what was then the largest diocese in the United States. He died in 1860 and is buried in the Redemptorist church in Philadelphia. Pope Paul VI Beatified John Neumann in 1963 and canonized him on June 19,1977.
