In promulgating the new Code of Canon Law on the 25th January 1983, Pope John Paul II emphasised the close links between the teaching of the Second Vatican Council on the Church and the preparation of the Code. ‘In fact, in a certain sense, the Holy Father wrote, ‘this new Code can be viewed as a great effort to translate the conciliar ecclesiological teaching into canonical terms’ (Pope John Paul II, Apostolic Constitution, Sacrae Discipline Leges, 25 January 1983). To assist a greater understanding of the life and mission of the Church and its structures among all members of the People of God, the Apostolic See has permitted and encouraged the translation of the new Code into vernacular languages. Within months of the Code’s promulgation in 1983, an English translation was published by the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland. In the years since then, this translation has been extensively corrected and refined. The present volume contains the fully revised and updated text. We hope that this volume will assist all those who use it to come to a deeper understanding and richer appreciation of the mystery of the Church and of the role of Canon Law within the life of the People of God.
